Fast bowler Mohit Sharma announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Wednesday, 3 December. The 37-year-old last featured in the Indian Premier League 2025 season for Delhi Capitals. Mohit, who played 26 ODIs and 8 T20Is for India between 2013 and 2015, revelled in his role as a death-overs specialist in T20 cricket in the twilight phase of his competitive career.
"Today, with a full heart, I announce my retirement from all formats of cricket," Mohit said in an Instagram post.
"From representing Haryana to wearing the India jersey and playing in the IPL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing."
Mohit was released by Delhi Capitals ahead of the upcoming IPL 2026 mini-auction, scheduled for 15 December in Abu Dhabi. The former Chennai Super Kings fast bowler played eight games and picked up only two wickets, conceding at an economy rate of 10.28. It was a blip in what had otherwise been a brilliant late flourish as a T20 specialist.
After missing the
2022 season of the IPL, Mohit was bought by Gujarat Titans in 2023 and stunned the cricket world with his wicket-taking ability at the death. He claimed 27 wickets, finishing just one short of the Purple Cap as a 35-year-old. Mohit continued his strong run, picking up 13 wickets in 12 matches for Gujarat in 2024 before being bought by Delhi for the 2025 season.
What truly distinguished Mohit, though, was his effectiveness in the death overs (overs 16–20). His repertoire — slower deliveries, cutters, and changes of pace — made him especially dangerous during the final phase of an innings when batters look to accelerate. Across his IPL career, he took 57 wickets in the death overs at an economy rate of roughly 9.82.
"You revolutionised bowling at the death with those back-of-the-hand slower balls. Congrats on a great career, Mohit bhai," Delhi Capitals said in a tribute to the pacer from Haryana.
Mohit also shared a heartwarming message for his wife, thanking her for all the support over the years.
