Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ended their four-match losing streak in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025), beating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by two wickets on Wednesday, May 7 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. After opting to bat first, KKR posted a decent score of 179/6 in their allotted 20 overs as captain Ajinkya Rahane led his team from the front with his innings of 48 (33).
Noor Ahmad spun a web around KKR batters as he registered his second four-wicket haul (4/31) of the season. In reply, CSK chased down the target in 19.3 overs, riding on a breathtaking knock from Dewald Brevis. The victory dented Kolkata's playoffs hopes as they're now heavily dependent on other teams' results to progress ahead in the tournament, being at sixth spot with 11 points.
Brevis rescued his team from a precarious position of 60/5 in 5.2 overs and played a belligerent knock to turn the tide in his team’s favour. The youngster looked busy at the crease right from the word go as he collected singles and doubles in the first four balls.
The Proteas batter collected his first boundary against Sunil Narine on the fifth ball and further hit him for a six in his next over to not let the required run rate get out of hand. Brevis quickly moved to 20 (16) as CSK were 93/5 at the halfway mark.
With an aim to break the 33-run stand, captain Rahane brought back Vaibhav Arora (3/48, 3 overs) into the attack and what followed next was carnage. Brevis immediately took on the right-arm seamer as he whacked him straight down the ground for a maximum at long off, where Angrkrish Raghuvanshi misjudged the ball coming towards him.
The 22-year-old made sure that Raghuvanshi was left regretting the chance as he unleashed his sleeping beast and clobbered Arora for three fours and two sixes to get 30 runs from his over. As a result, Brevis brought up his half century off 22 balls and completely shifted the game in CSK’s favour, who required just 57 runs off 54 balls. KKR managed to get rid of Brevis as he holed out to Rinku Singh at long on against Varun
Chakravarthy.
Earlier, CSK’s run chase got off to the worst possible start as they lost in-form Ayush Mhatre on the second ball itself for a duck. Urvil Patel, who was making his IPL debut, walked in at number three and wasted no time in settling down as he got off the mark with a massive six on just his second ball.
However, wickets continued to tumble as Moeen Ali cleaned up Devon Conway for a two-ball duck. It had little effect on Patel, who continued his onslaught and quickly moved to 31 (10) with the help of one four and four sixes. He finally fell prey to Harshit Rana, who also dismissed Ravichandran Ashwin (8 off 7), whose promotion to number four failed big time.
To further add to CSK’s woes, Varun Chakravarthy (2/18) shattered Ravindra Jadeja’s stumps as they lost five wickets inside the powerplay. It took a whirlwind innings from Dewald Brevis, who was well-supported by Shivam Dube (45 off 40), and a finishing touch from MS Dhoni (17* off 18) to help CSK get over the line after a horrible start.
In the first innings, captain Ajinkya Rahane continued his rich form and stabilised his team’s innings after losing his opening partner Rahmanullah Gurbaz (11 off 9). Rahane added 58 runs for the second wicket off just 34 balls with Sunil Narine (26 off 17). With KKR in the driver’s seat after seven overs, captain MS Dhoni brought on his trump card, Noor Ahmad, who dismissed Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (1 off 2) in his first over to restore parity.
After losing two quick wickets, Rahane continued to take the innings forward but missed out on his fourth half century of the season as he got caught at short third man, while trying to reverse sweep Jadeja.
After Rahane, valuable contributions from Andre Russell (38 off 21) and Manish Pandey (36* off 28) took KKR to 179/6 in 20 overs. Noor Ahmad continued to break partnerships throughout KKR's innings as he dismissed Sunil Narine (26 off 17), Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Andre Russell and Rinku Singh (9 off 6) to register figures of 4/31 in four overs.
