South Africa wicketkeeper batter Quinton de Kock won’t be taking part in the second T20I against India at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack after sustaining a hand injury. The southpaw looked in impressive form during the Proteas’ five-wicket win on Thursday, June 10 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

For the second T20I, right-handed batter Reeza Hendricks replaced him. Temba Bavuma, the skipper of the visiting team, put forth the update on De Kock during the toss. In the meantime, Tristan Stubbs was replaced with the very-experienced Heinrich Klaasen.

“We have two forced changes; QDK has a hand injury and Stubbs misses out, Klaasen and Hendricks come in,” Bavuma was quoted as saying before the game. Barring any surprising move from the Proteas, Hendricks is

set to open the batting for the South Africans.

De Kock is among the leading run-scorers for South Africa in T20Is and is within touching distance of overhauling former batter JP Duminy’s tally.

The southpaw was in impressive form in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL), having scored a century for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). It was on the back of De Kock’s performance that the Super Giants managed to qualify for the playoffs.

De Kock not playing in the second T20I of the ongoing series means that South Africa’s batting would be depleted to some extent if not a whole lot. It remains to be seen if the left-handed batter could get fit and play in the last three T20Is of the tour.
