India ended the second day of the third Test against England in a fine position on the back of an unbeaten half-century from KL Rahul following Jasprit Bumrah's exploits with the ball. Rahul struck his 11th fifty-plus score as opener in SENA countries to lead the charge with the bat on what was a gripping day of Test cricket. The day started with England 251/4 and ended with India getting to 145/3, trailing by 242 more.
Rahul played a cautious knock as he made 43 from 113 balls, laced with five fours. While the visitors lost three wickets, Rahul held one end up, going unbeaten alongside Rishabh Pant, who made an unbeaten 19 from 33 balls.
India are now 242 more behind and have many batters to follow with the likes of Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar waiting in the wings.
For England, Jofra Archer struck in his first over after returning to Test cricket following an over four-year absence. Archer nicked off Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second over after the Indian Southpaw had hit three fours in the first
over.
Rahul and Karun Nair stabilised things with a strong stand. They took the team 44/1 at tea and did well in the initial phase of the third session, until Ben Stokes struck and removed Nair for a fighting 40. India captain Shubman Gill, fresh off his heroics of the Birmingham Test, spent a decent time in the middle and made 16 from 44 balls before falling to Chris Woakes, edging behind a ball to Jamie Smith.
Pant played a measured hand, while Rahul played with caution as India ended the day on 145/3.
Before, Jasprit Bumrah had taken a five-wicket haul to help India bowl England out for 387. This was his 13th fifer away from home, which are now the most for an Indian in away Tests. This was also Bumrah's 11th fifer in the history of the World Test Championship, which is also the most now. Before Bumrah's brilliance, Root had got to his 37th Test ton. India then made a comeback with three wickets in the first session, before Carse and Woakes hit fifties. However, the visitors cleaned the tail in the second session for 387.
