Senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday shared warm words of appreciation for Indian men's cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir after meeting the former India batter in Nagpur ahead of the first T20I of the five-match series against New Zealand at the VCA Stadium in Jamtha. Heaped with praise for Gambhir, Tharoor described the India coach as "the man with the hardest job in India after the Prime Minister."
Tharoor, however, came out in strong support of Gambhir, praising his composure and leadership amid mounting criticism. In a post on X, the Thiruvananthapuram MP highlighted how the India coach continues to stay calm despite being "second-guessed by millions daily."
"In Nagpur, enjoyed a good &
frank discussion with my old friend @GautamGambhir, the man with the hardest job in India after the PM's! He is being second-guessed by millions daily but stays calm & walks on undaunted. A word of appreciation for his quiet determination and able leadership. Wishing him all success - starting today!" Tharoor wrote ahead of the opening T20I.
His remarks came at a time when Gambhir had been under public scrutiny following India's first-ever home ODI series defeat to New Zealand. After winning the opening match, India went on to lose the second and third ODIs, conceding the series 2-1. It marked the second home series loss to the Kiwis in recent times, following New Zealand's 3-0 whitewash of India in a Test series in 2024.
