The new-look team India once again showed their fighting spirit in the face of adversity as KL Rahul and Shubman Gill made sure that the fourth Test against England went into Day 5. Their presence at the crease sent a sense of calm in the Indian dressing room, which was filled with eerie silence after a disastrous first session.
A match where England have dominated most of the sessions, India are fighting their way back into it as Rahul and Gill forged an unbeaten 174-run stand for the third wicket, which allowed them to finish Day 4 on 174/2, trailing England by 137 runs in the second innings.
The duo got
together at the crease after Chris Woakes ran riot with the new ball, dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan for ducks in the first over itself. As captain Gill came out to bat, he must’ve felt like walking into a funeral with the England crowd jeering him and Woakes and Archer breathing fire with the new ball.
However, Gill and Rahul showed nerves of steel, battling through the tricky three-over period before lunch and later continued their vigil in the second session. The duo saw off the precarious phase with the new ball and also played some of the most gorgeous shots known to mankind as they ensured India went into tea unscathed.
