Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered another failure in IPL 2026, marking his fifth consecutive low score this season. The skipper's continued struggles at the top have added to CSK's batting concerns, despite flashes of brilliance elsewhere in the lineup.
Opening alongside Sanju Samson, Gaikwad has managed just 63 runs in five innings at an average of 12.6, raising questions about his role and approach in the side.
Against Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday, Gaikwad once again failed to capitalise on an opportunity to regain form, getting dismissed while attempting a slog sweep off Anukul Roy on just his sixth delivery.
"Ruturaj Gaikwad's batting approach definitely needs attention. If his approach in the last match is considered, he faced 17 balls and his control percentage was excellent. It means he did not take much risk and was not looking to play too aggressively," Irfan Pathan said on his YouTube
channel following CSK's win against Delhi Capitals.
Ruturaj Gaikwad's lack of intent at the top has placed additional pressure on Sanju Samson, who has emerged as one of the few positives for Chennai Super Kings, highlighted by his unbeaten 115 off 56 balls. Meanwhile, CSK's opening pair have managed just one fifty-plus partnership in five innings, underlining the inconsistency in their starts.
"He did not want to lose his wicket. Then just play at number three. If he wants to continue with this approach, he should bat at No. 3. But if he wants to open, then as Ruturaj Gaikwad, his approach will have to change," Irfan Pathan added.
CSK's opening combination has struggled to provide solid platforms this season, with Gaikwad's highest score being just 28. While Samson appears to have regained form, Gaikwad's prolonged lean patch has disrupted the team's balance, particularly in the powerplay, where early momentum remains crucial.
