For decades, fenugreek or methi, has been a quiet staple in Indian kitchens. But today, soaked methi seeds are finding renewed attention for their role in managing digestion, blood sugar, and weight. In an interview-style interaction, Dr. Parmeet Kaur, registered dietician at Marengo Asia Hospital, Gurugram, explains why soaking methi seeds makes all the difference, and who should be careful before adding them to their morning routine.

HOW SHOULD WE CONSUME SOAKED METHI SEEDS?
According to Dr. Kaur, how you consume methi seeds is as important as why you consume them.

“Soaking fenugreek seeds overnight hydrates and softens them, making them far easier for the body to digest and absorb,” she explains. “Raw methi seeds are very hard and can irritate the gut, while boiling them may destroy some heat-sensitive nutrients.”

When soaked, methi seeds release mucilage, a gel-like substance that coats the stomach lining. “This mucilage acts like a natural protective layer for the gut. It helps soothe acidity, acid reflux, and indigestion, especially when taken on an empty stomach,” Dr. Kaur says.

The recommended method is simple: soak one teaspoon of methi seeds in a glass of water overnight and consume both the seeds and the water the next morning, ideally before breakfast.

CAN SOAKED METHI SEEDS HELP IN WEIGHT LOSS?
Weight loss is one of the most talked-about benefits of soaked fenugreek seeds, and Dr. Kaur says the science behind it is solid.

“Soaked methi seeds are rich in soluble fiber, which promotes fullness and reduces unnecessary snacking,” she says. “When consumed before meals, they slow down carbohydrate digestion and absorption.”

This delayed digestion prevents sudden spikes in blood sugar, which in turn reduces insulin surges, often responsible for fat storage, especially around the abdomen. Over time, this steady metabolic response can support gradual and sustainable weight loss.

However, Dr. Kaur cautions against treating methi as a shortcut. “It works best when combined with a balanced diet and regular physical activity. Fenugreek is a support tool, not a



magic solution.”

DO SOAKED METHI SEEDS HELP IN CONTROLLING DIABETES?
Fenugreek seeds have long been associated with blood sugar control, and Dr. Kaur confirms their potential role in diabetes management.

“Fenugreek slows carbohydrate breakdown and improves insulin sensitivity,” she explains. “This helps prevent sharp post-meal blood sugar spikes, which are a major concern for people with diabetes.”

The soluble fiber and compounds in methi seeds help regulate glucose absorption in the intestines, making them especially beneficial when taken before meals.

That said, Dr. Kaur issues a strong word of caution: “Fenugreek is known to lower blood sugar levels. For people already taking insulin or oral anti-diabetic drugs, consuming methi seeds without medical supervision can push blood sugar dangerously low.”

She advises diabetic patients to consult their doctor or dietician before adding soaked methi seeds to their daily routine.
