More than 500 students and 21 staff members at Clarence High School in Bengaluru’s Richards Town have reportedly fallen ill with symptoms including fever, cold, cough and body aches, prompting the school to remain closed for two days.
According to news reports, two students have tested positive for H1N1 among those who developed symptoms. The large number of students and staff reporting illness has raised concerns about the possible spread of respiratory infection within the school community.
School authorities have reportedly attributed the outbreak to unhygienic conditions around the school, particularly waste accumulated near
local street food stalls and other vendors.
The school authorities said they had repeatedly raised concerns about the conditions with civic body officials. They have alleged that adequate action has not yet been taken to address the sanitation concerns around the school.
The school has been shut for two days following the reported outbreak. The closure comes as students and staff deal with symptoms of fever, cough, cold and body aches.
With two H1N1 cases reportedly confirmed, health officials and the school administration will need to monitor students and staff for further symptoms and possible transmission.
