Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which excessive generation of thyroid hormone takes place by thyroid gland. The increased production results in the body to speed up its functions such as the heart beats rapidly etc. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is graves disease. It’s actually a problem with your immune system.

HYPERTHYROIDISM’S CONNECTION TO GRAVES DISEASE

T3 and T4 are the hormones which are generated by the thyroid gland present at the base of the neck. These T3 and T4 regulate the usage of energy by the body. This is controlled by the pituitary gland in the brain. When a person is infected from graves disease the immune system generate antibodies which behave like thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) which results in the excess production of thyroid hormones by the body. It is also known as an overactive thyroid.

CAUSES OF GRAVES DISEASE

Genes : It can be a hereditary problem wherein you inherit the disease by the genes of your family.

Gender: Hormones play an important role in graves disease. Due to these hormonal changes it is believed women to suffer with this disease more than

anybody.

Stress: Severe stress can act as a fresh start to trigger the disease.

Pregnancy: Pregnancy affects thyroid and might trigger graves disease.

Infection: Infection might play a role in the graves disease.

TESTS WHICH HELP YOU FIND OUT GRAVES DISEASE

Thyroid Function Test: In this test a blood sample is taken to verify the amount of T4 hormones and TSH. In case of overactive thyroid T4 will be high. A low amount of TSH when found confirms it for overactive thyroid.

Radioactive iodine uptake: In this the consumption of iodine by thyroid gland is tested. It helps in ruling out the possibilities of an overactive thyroid.

Antibody test: In this blood sample of the patient is taken to conduct the test for antibodies. The lab tests to find the links of antibodies to graves disease.
