A Jhansi district court has issued a non-bailable warrant against actor Rakhi Sawant in connection with a 16-year-old case involving the suicide of a man who had appeared on her television show Rakhi Ka Insaaf in November 2010.
The man, who was from the Prem Nagar police station area of Jhansi, had appeared on the show with his wife to discuss a marital dispute. During the programme, Sawant called him impotent while attempting to address the couple’s disagreement.
The man later died by suicide. The court has now issued a non-bailable warrant against Sawant in connection with the case.
According to PTI, District Government Counsel (Crime) Mridul Kant Srivastava said the Additional District and Sessions Judge of the Fast Track Court issued the warrant on Friday after Rakhi Sawant repeatedly failed to
appear before the court.
The case stems from a complaint filed by Lakshman Ahirwar’s mother, Savitri, at the Prem Nagar police station. She alleged that Sawant had used insulting and objectionable language against her son during an episode of Rakhi Ka Insaaf aired in October 2010.
Srivastava said the next hearing in the case is scheduled for December 1.
Rakhi Ka Insaaf addressed personal and social issues through disputes brought before Sawant, with the show often featuring dramatic confrontations. The programme came under scrutiny after Lakshman died by suicide following his appearance on the show.
Lakshman’s family alleged that he slipped into depression after the episode and claimed that he later drank himself to death. Following this, the case was filed in Jhansi.
