Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited film Jana Nayagan is gearing up for its release on January 9, coinciding with the Pongal festival. Advance ticket salesof the film have already set new benchmarks, both in India and internationally, ahead of the film’s official arrival in cinemas. As Vijay prepares to enter full-time politics, this film is being seen as his final acting project before the transition, drawing considerable attention from fans and cinema watchers alike.
According to data from Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan has generated Rs 35 crore in global pre-sales. Out of this, India’s share stands at nearly Rs 7 crore, with Karnataka alone contributing Rs 4 crore. The majority of collections, however, have come from overseas, where the film’s advance ticket sales have crossed the Rs 25 crore mark. Industry analysts note that these numbers underline not only Vijay’s popularity but also the growing market for Indian films abroad.
Despite advance booking not yet being fully open in Tamil Nadu, Jana Nayagan is already delivering notable sales in the state. From the limited number of shows currently available, the film has grossed nearly Rs 1 crore through advance bookings. Tamil Nadu, being Vijay’s home state and a traditional stronghold for his films, is expected to see these numbers increase further as more theatres open bookings.
In Malaysia, the film has witnessed unprecedented demand. At a
recent audio launch event, 50,000 tickets were sold in just two hours, setting a new record for the fastest ticket sale for an Indian film in Malaysia. The film has also sold over 50,000 tickets in the UK, reflecting its strong international pull.
Karnataka has shown high enthusiasm, particularly in Bengaluru, where ticket prices for early morning shows have surged to between Rs 1,800 and Rs 2,000. Theatres like Mukunda have already sold out their 6:30 am shows, and most cinema halls in the city have limited seats left for the first day’s screenings. Early morning shows have seen prices ranging from Rs 800 to Rs 1,500, with high demand reported across venues.
The film’s cast includes Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, and Bobby Deol, who join Vijay in pivotal roles. The recently released trailer features Vijay as a fearless police officer, which has sparked comparisons to the 2023 Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari starring Balakrishna. The anticipation generated by the trailer has added to the overall momentum for the film’s release.
Box office experts point out that Vijay’s decision to step away from acting after Jana Nayagan and move into full-time politics may have contributed to the surge in advance sales, as fans see it as a significant moment in his career. The Pongal release date is likely to further boost collections, with the festive period known for strong cinema attendance across South India.
