Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to late playback legend Lata Mangeshkar on the occasion of her birthday on Sunday, and hailed late singer Zubeen Garg as an icon who brought recognition to Assamese music. PM Modi was addressing the nation in the latest edition of his radio show, Mann Ki Baat, when he spoke of the two icons of music.

Remembering his bond with "Lata Didi", PM Modi spoke of her tradition of sending him a Rakhi every year. "The bond of affection I shared with Lata Didi always remained intact. She used to send me a Rakhi every year without fail," he said in his Mann Ki Baat address. PM Modi described Lata Mangeshkar as a national inspiration, and said: "Anyone interested in Indian culture and music cannot help but be overwhelmed by her songs. Her songs have everything that stirs human emotions." He added: "The patriotic songs sung by her inspire people. She also had a deep connection with Indian culture. I offer my heartfelt tribute to Lata



Didi."

Speaking of Lata Mangeshkar, PM Modi also spoke of Veer Savarkar as one of the "great personalities who inspired Lata Didi." He added: "She gave her melodious voice to many of Veer Savarkar's compositions."

Apart from his tribute to Lata Mangeshkar in the latest Mann Ki Baat episode, PM Modi also spoke of the Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, who passed away recently. "People are mourning the untimely demise of Zubeen Garg ji. Zubeen Garg was a renowned singer who earned recognition across the country. He had a deep bond with the culture of Assam. Zubeen Garg will forever remain in our memories, and his music will continue to captivate generations."

Describing Zubeen Garg as the Kohinoor of Assamese culture, PM Modi said: "Although he is physically gone from our midst, he will remain forever in our hearts."

In the latest edition of Mann ki Baat, PM Modi also paid tribute to noted Kannada novelist SL Bhyrappa, who passed away on September 24.
