A controversy has erupted around filmmaker SS Rajamouli after a police complaint was filed alleging that he made derogatory remark about Lord Hanuman during the title launch of his upcoming Telugu film 'Varanasi'. His comment during the event, held at Hyderabad's Ramoji Film Studios, has now sparked an online debate on artistic freedom, personal belief, and religious sensitivity.

Following the event, organisations including Vanarasena and Gow Rakshak Sangh submitted a written complaint to the Saroor Nagar Police Inspector, accusing Rajamouli of “intentionally insulting Hindu deities” and delivering remarks “with the intention of provoking religious hatred.” The letter urges legal action and warns that such statements could incite tension between

communities.

Rajamouli’s comment, made publicly in front of the press, film personalities, and fans, have been widely circulated online. Addressing his personal stance on faith, he said, “This is an emotional moment for me. I don’t believe in God. My dad came and said Lord Hanuman will take care of things from behind. Is this how he takes care? Thinking of this, I am angry.” His remarks came after the event reportedly faced multiple technical glitches and leaks.

The filmmaker went on to reference his family’s religious beliefs, adding, “My wife is also fond of Lord Hanuman. She behaves as if he’s her friend and converses with him. I got angry at her as well.” Another line – “Is he even a god?” – has since become central to the controversy, with critics labelling it offensive and provocative.
