The race for Britain’s top indie film honours is heating up. The nominations for the 2025 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) were announced on Monday, with Akinola Davies Jr.’s 'My Father’s Shadow' and Harry Lighton’s 'Pillion' leading the pack. Davies’ poetic family drama scored 12 nods, while Lighton’s evocative road movie followed closely with '10'. Both premiered to acclaim at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The announcement was made in London by actors Ben Hardy and Saura Lightfoot-Leon.
Davies and Lighton have both earned nominations for Best Debut Director and Best Screenplay, cementing their status as two of the most exciting new voices in British
cinema.
The performance categories are stacked with heavyweight talent and breakout names alike. Jennifer Lawrence earned a nomination for her intense turn in 'Die My Love', which picked up eight nominations in total. Cillian Murphy is recognised for 'Steve', while Wasteman stars David Jonsson and Tom Blyth also feature among the contenders. Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgard are nominated for 'Pillion', with Robert Aramayo joining the list for his role in 'I Swear'.
As the BIFAs continue to champion bold, independent storytelling, the 2025 edition looks to celebrate a generation of filmmakers redefining British cinema with grit, vision, and authenticity.
