John Nolan, the British actor known for his roles in films like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises, has died at 87. His death was confirmed by his nephew, filmmaker Christopher Nolan, who paid tribute to his uncle’s artistic influence and legacy.
The actor shared a close bond with Christopher Nolan and television producer Jonathan Nolan. They collaborated on several prominent projects over the years.
In a statement to The Independent, Christopher described John as “the first artist I knew,” adding that he
taught him “more than anyone about the search for truth in acting and the joys of creative achievement.” He further expressed deep sorrow at his uncle’s death but found comfort in their shared memories, particularly their work together.
John appeared in several of Christopher’s films, beginning with the director’s debut feature, Following. He played Douglas Fredericks, a Wayne Enterprises board member, in Batman Begins and reprised the role in The Dark Knight Rises. Their final collaboration was on the war drama Dunkirk.
