Bollywood's big Diwali release this year, 'Thamma', has started off slowly in advance bookings. With one day left for its release, the Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna starrer has sold over one lakh tickets all across India in Hindi and Telugu languages. The film has grossed around Rs 3.09 crore, and Rs 7.01 crore for its opening day with block seats, according to trade website Sacnilk.

Given the festive mood, 'Thamma' is expected to pick up on Monday evening, once the main Diwali celebrations wind down and families head out for post-festivity outings. However, the film faces a strong challenge at the box office from 'Kantara:

Chapter 1', which continues to dominate as the audience's first choice in the Hindi belt.

If the Aditya Sarpotdkar directorial manages to generate good word-of-mouth, it could enjoy a better run than 'Munjya' and 'Bhediya' - the previous films in Maddock's horror-comedy universe. That said, comparisons with 'Stree' and 'Stree 2', which turned the universe into a cinematic winner, would be unfair.

'Thamma' also rides on Ayushmann Khurrana's goodwill among the audience, who often trust his choice of scripts and performances. If this experiment works, Khurrana could see a remarkable box office comeback.
