Actor Sara Ali Khan has addressed the ongoing discourse around her family legacy. She clarified that her father, actor Saif Ali Khan, has never negotiated her film contracts or used his industry standing to secure work for her. She reflected on the double-edged nature of coming from a prominent film family. The actor emphasised that while her background granted her early visibility, it also often overshadows the individual effort and independent choices she has made throughout her career.
Speaking to Filmfare, Sara noted that she was raised by a single mother, Amrita Singh, without a traditional industry safety net guiding her professional decisions.
"I live with a single mother. I’ve not had a father going to offices, negotiating my contracts and begging people to take me in their films. When I had a problem with Kedarnath, I sorted it out myself. There was no one with me. It’s a double-edged sword. Because I’ve not had a godfather in the industry at all," she
said.
The actor acknowledged the distinct privileges her lineage afforded her, admitting she is neither "naive nor delusional" to overlook the doors her family background opened early on. However, she maintained that the constant scrutiny often sets an unreasonably high bar.
Sara emphasised how the label of nepotism has acquired a blanket negative connotation, arguing that it unfairly diminishes the hard work put in by star kids like herself, Janhvi Kapoor, and Ananya Panday, none of whom had a say in their parentage.
While conceding that she and her peers received coveted debuts that aspiring actors crave, Sara questioned why the burden of proof continues to rest on her shoulders. Eight years into her journey in Hindi cinema, she asserted that she should no longer be required to repeatedly justify her space in the industry. The 31-year-old highlighted that while the initial edge is undeniable, long-term survival demands personal accountability and independence.
