A separate Women Empowerment Cell was inaugurated in the Osmania University Arts College on the eve of International Women’s Day today.

Speaking as the chief guest, Prof. Beena Chintalapuri, (former) first woman Registrar of the OU and Ashoka Fellowship Awardee, urged the gathering to “be sensitive to the environment and opportunities.” Prof. Beena shared details of her work among prisoners under Unnati, a cognitive behavioral change programme run by her. She expressed her gratitude and said she owed her success to the University for all the progress. The celebrations were themed “Empowering women for future- persistence for progress”.

invitee congratulated the university for setting up the Cell and pointed out that empowerment of women starts at home teaching children to respect women.” She shared her experience at her work place where she faced discrimination. Eventually, “ justice was delivered after protesting”, she added.

Prof. Surya Dhanunjay, convener of the newly formed Cell outlined its goals and objectives. Prof. D. Ravinder, Principal, Arts College, Prof. M. Ramullu, Vice-Principal OU, Deans of Arts and Social Sciences, Prof. G. Padmaja, University of Hyderabad, Prof. C. Mrunalini, Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University,V. Annapurna, Finance officer, were also present. Over 200 members attended the function which was followed by a cultural program.
