The ecommerce industry is growing bigger by the day in India and continues to be on a hiring spree. And the profiles that are in demand the most are operations, mobile technology, category positions, PR and marketing and client acquisition (alliances), says Amla Awasthi, AVP-HR at Indiamart, an online marketplace that connects buyers to suppliers.
"It's an emerging industry where we look forward for sales, technology, servicing and brand profiles," Awasthi said at a recent High-Tea career chat session on TimesJobs.com.
Asked what makes e-commerce a good career option compared to other dotcom industries, she said: "There are multiple options for role change and growth (in e-commerce). Since it is a more vibrant sector, we see many options of learning and task orientations. E-commerce gives more space to experiment and implement new technologies."
Entry level
Fresh graduates can start off in product division - on technical as well as non-technical fronts. Others can try sales. "A good career progression is planned for fresh blood," she says.
Middle level
There are a plethora of opportunities of candidates with 2-5 years of experience in ecommerce.
Awasthi said that for a candidate with an MBA in marketing, her company was open to brand and product marketing roles for internal as well as external branding. For someone working into retail operations, servicing was a good option, besides operations, she said.
Age criteria
Asked if ecommerce companies only tend to hire youngsters, she said that age was not a big criterion, except for a few e-commerce companies.

"The sector definitely has many options for the 40 years and above age group. It depends upon how skilled the person is, what is the bandwidth of the person to change as per currents trends and what is the contribution that the person can come up with and support the growth of the organisation," she said.
