Telugu not mandatory for Class X in 2026–27 in Telangana

The State government has once again extended major relief to non-Telugu speaking school students as it exempted them from studying Telugu as a compulsory subject.

As per a recent memo, the mandatory Telugu subject will not be implemented for Class X students during the academic year 2026-27. At present, this rule is not in force for Class IX students this academic year 2025-26.

However, students who are pursuing Class VIII in the present academic year have to study Telugu in Class IX in the next academic year.

In a memo that modified earlier order, Education Department Secretary Yogita Rana said, “The government hereby extends the time period for implementation of Telugu



as the compulsory subject for students studying Classes IX during the academic year 2025-26 and students of Class X during the academic year 2026-27 of all managements in the State.”

According to officials, this decision was taken as some non-Telugu speaking students moved the High Court seeking an exemption from studying Telugu.

Earlier, the government had given exemption from studying Telugu as a mandatory subject for academic years 2024-25 and 2025-26.

Meanwhile, the School Education Department directed its regional joint directors of school education and district educational officers to communicate the department’s decision to all schools and submit a compliance report.
