Telangana Inter Board unveils major exam reforms

From restructuring practical examinations to the introduction of internal assessments, the Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (TGBIE) on Thursday announced major reforms in the scheme of examination from the academic year 2026-27.

Science subjects ? physics, chemistry, botany and zoology ? will now have practical exams in both first and second-year intermediate, with 15 marks for each, while there is no change in the theory examination scheme. So far, the practical exams were held for second-year students for 30 marks.

An activity-based learning system for internal assessment, with 15 marks each for first and second-year intermediate, has been introduced in the mathematics subject. Previously, mathematics had no internal assessment. In addition, the mathematics theory exam will be conducted for 60 marks instead of 75 marks from the upcoming academic year.

The TGBIE has also introduced activity-based learning for internal assessment for 20 marks in humanities (commerce & accountancy), economics, political science, history, geography, public



administration, languages, modern languages under part III (Telugu, Hindi, English and Urdu), and Accountancy, Commerce and Economics streams. Unlike 100 marks in the past, the theory exams will be conducted for 80 marks in these streams.

Another major reform the Board announced is implementing a separate question paper for mathematics for MEC students. So far, both MPC and MEC students shared the same question paper.

Further, MEC students will also have activity-based learning in mathematics for 20 marks and theory exams will be conducted for 80 marks instead of 75 marks similar to MPC mathematics.

Further, the Board revised first-year intermediate textbooks, which will be implemented from the academic year 2026-27. The textbooks have been printed with diagrams, knowledge boxes, QR codes, Indian knowledge systems and simulations where applicable, the BIE said.

The distribution of revised textbooks will be taken up before June 1, it said, adding that compared to the previous academic year, the distribution of textbooks is timely.
