Punjab has ordered the closure of all government, aided, private schools, colleges, universities and polytechnics across the state until September 7, 2025, in light of worsening flood conditions.
The decision, earlier expected to be lifted by September 3, reflects the increasing urgency of the situation. Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains made the announcement on X, quoting orders from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann: “As directed by Hon’ble CM Punjab Sh. Bhagwant Singh Mann Ji, in view of the flood situation, all Govt/Aided/Recognized & Private Schools, Colleges, Universities & Polytechnics across Punjab will remain closed till 7th Sept 2025. Everyone is requested to strictly follow local administration’s
guidelines.”
This closure comes amid what many describe as Punjab’s worst floods since 1988. All 23 districts have been declared affected, with over 30 fatalities and 350,000 people impacted, including mass evacuations and infrastructure damage.
More than 1,000 villages have been inundated, and approximately 61,000 hectares of farmland submerged, displacing about 1.46 million residents.
This extension follows an earlier temporary closure from August 27 to 30, then again till September 3, all aimed at safeguarding students and staff amid heavy rainfall and dangerous flooding.
Education Minister Bains also warned private schools that defy the order by calling teachers to school will face strict administrative action.
