The governments of Punjab and the Jammu Division announced the closure of schools as a precautionary measure due to weather-related emergencies.
In Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that "all primary, secondary, and senior secondary government and private schools in the state will remain closed from August 27 to August 30" in response to continuous heavy rainfall and further forecasts of intense downpours.
The Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers are rising rapidly, while dam water releases have aggravated the situation. Several districts, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Kapurthala, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Jalandhar, Rupnagar, Sangrur, Mansa, and Bathinda, are facing flood-like conditions with extensive waterlogging and submerged
agricultural land.
Emergency operations are being overseen from a central flood control centre in Jalandhar, with the support of NDRF and SDRF teams assisting local administrations.
Meanwhile, in the Jammu Division of Jammu & Kashmir, an official order issued by the Directorate of School Education, Jammu, mandates that "all Government as well as private schools in the Jammu Division shall remain closed on 27th August 2025 (Wednesday)" due to inclement weather and developing flood-like conditions.
This marks the third consecutive day of closures. Torrential rain has disrupted normal life: schools remain shut, exams have been postponed, recruitment drives for constables are suspended, and emergency services are managing widespread damage.
