India has reached a milestone in school education as the number of teachers has crossed the one crore mark for the first time in UDISE+'s history, according to the Ministry of Education's UDISE+ 2024-25 report.
The rise is being presented as a major step towards improving student-teacher ratios and narrowing regional disparities in teaching availability.
The report has shown steady growth in teacher numbers since 2022-23, with a 6.7% increase during the reporting year. Officials have emphasised that this expansion is
central to delivering more individual attention to learners across foundational to secondary levels.
TEACHER NUMBERS AND STUDENT TEACHER RATIO
Teacher strength has moved from 94,83,294 in 2022-23 to 1,01,22,420 in 2024-25. That has contributed to markedly improved student teacher ratios: 10 at the Foundational level, 13 at Preparatory, 17 at Middle and 21 at Secondary.
These ratios compare favourably with the National Education Policy benchmark of 1:30 and are likely to support better classroom interaction.
