The Indira Gandhi National Open University has bagged the first place followed by Netaji Subhash Open University (Kolkata), and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (Ahmedabad) in the second, and third places under the open universities category.

The Education Ministry today released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2024. This year, the ministry has added three new categories to classify Indian universities — open universities, skill universities and state-funded government universities.

This year, the evaluation criteria is also modified. The faculty-to-student ratio has been changed from 1:15 to 1:10 in medical

institutes and increased from 1:15 to 1:20 in the state government universities. The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five broad parameters — teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity and perception.

The NDA government started the India Ranking in 2016 where they give ranking to higher educational institutes based on criteria decided by them. With 13 categories, 2013 edition of NIRF was the largest so far. The categories were — overall, university, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, innovation and research.
