The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been given the responsibility of granting equivalence to Class 10 and Class 12 certificates issued by school education boards across the country. This move, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to establish uniformity among different boards, making it easier for students to migrate between institutions or apply for higher education and government jobs.
According to the Ministry of Education, NCERT will carry out this function through its National Assessment Centre Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH). The mechanism is designed to ensure a fair, transparent, and academically rigorous process
while maintaining national standards in school education.
The system will cover certificates issued by boards set up through Central or State legislation, executive orders, statutory authorities, and other recognised bodies. Once equivalence is granted by NCERT, it will automatically be accepted as intersse parity across boards, providing nationwide validity.
This reform, officially notified in the e-Gazette on September 6, 2025, replaces the earlier framework under which the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) handled equivalence. With NCERT now in charge, the government expects smoother student mobility and a simplified admission process across schools, colleges, and universities in India.
