The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday announced the winter vacation schedule for schools in the Kashmir valley and the winter zone of the Jammu region, as the cold wave across the state intensified over the past week.

According to an official order, the winter break will begin in phases. Authorities said the decision was taken as temperatures in several parts of Kashmir have dipped several degrees below freezing, making regular school functioning difficult, especially for younger students.

Pre-primary classes will close for winter break from November 26 (Wednesday).

For students of classes 1 to 8, the last working day will be December 1. Officials stated that the staggered closure ensures that

students complete essential academic requirements despite the early onset of harsh weather.

For classes 9 to 12, academic work will stop from December 11.

The government said this schedule allows senior students additional instructional days before the long winter break while still ensuring their safety during extreme cold conditions.

Schools up to class 8 are scheduled to reopen on March 1 next year, marking the start of the new academic term after the extended winter closure.

Higher classes will return earlier, with classes 9 to 12 resuming on February 22. The phased reopening is meant to help schools manage the transition effectively and prepare for the new academic cycle.
