Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi has shifted all classes online with immediate effect after students protesting for the restoration of campus union elections clashed with security guards on Saturday.
Chaos erupted on the campus when security guards, who had been monitoring the protest, moved to remove tents set up by the protesting students, some of whom were on hunger strike. A video of the incident showed students and security guards engaged in a scuffle, with some protesters attempting to pull their fellow mates and security guards away and pacify the situation.
Since October 12, the student protesters have been
demanding the reintroduction of elections to the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union (JMISU). The union was disbanded in 2006 following incidents of campus violence that led to academic disruptions.
The ongoing protest has also been caught up in a controversy over posters and slogans that appeared on the campus, including those calling for the release of Sharjeel Imam, a JNU PhD scholar who has been jailed in connection with the anti-CAA protests and is facing anti-terror charges.
Posters bearing slogans such as 'Free Kashmir', 'RSS go back' and 'Free Sharjeel Imam' have added to the controversy.
