In the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), which include the CRPF and the BSF, there were more than 83,000 open positions as of January 1 despite a total strength of 10,15,237 postings, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and Assam Rifles are the forces where the positions are vacant.

"The current number of vacancies as on January 1, 2023 in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles are 83,127 against total sanctioned strength of 10,15,237," Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.

He said that between July 2022 and January 2023, 32,181 employees were hired, and that 64,444 further positions have been announced and are in various stages of recruiting. He added that the exercise was intended to be completed in 2023.

It would be inaccurate to claim that the open positions are forcing current

employees to work more hours, the minister continued.

The minister noted that the process of filling vacancies is ongoing and that the home ministry has been and will continue to make serious efforts to do so through the UPSC, SSC, and the relevant forces.

In Jammu & Kashmir and the northeast, the CRPF is used for internal security tasks, the upkeep of law and order, and anti-militancy operations.

The 3,323 km border with Pakistan (excluding the 740 km Line of Control) and the 4,096 km border with Bangladesh are both protected by the BSF.

The CISF protects crucial infrastructure, including nuclear power plants, critical industries, metro networks, and other significant government structures.

The 3,488 km long Sino-Indian border is patrolled by the ITBP.

India's borders with Nepal (1,751 km) and Bhutan (699 km) are patrolled by the SSB.

The Assam Rifles conducts anti-militancy operations in the northeast in addition to guarding the 1,643 km long border between India and Myanmar.
