A group of doctors has approached President Droupadi Murmu seeking urgent intervention in the closure of a newly opened medical college in Jammu, alleging that the country’s medical education regulator bowed to sectarian pressure.
The controversy centres on the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, whose permission to run 50 MBBS seats for the 2025–26
academic session was abruptly withdrawn earlier this month by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
The regulator cited multiple complaints related to infrastructure and faculty shortages, which it said were confirmed during inspections.
However, the decision has triggered allegations that religious considerations influenced the withdrawal.
