The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked affiliated schools to set up special display boards to raise awareness about high sugar consumption among students. The move follows a sharp increase in Type 2 diabetes among children in recent years, a condition earlier seen mostly in adults.

In a letter sent to school heads, CBSE said the rise in sugar-related health issues is worrying. One major reason, the board noted, is the easy access to sugary snacks, drinks, and packaged foods inside school premises.

The CBSE stated that high sugar intake in children is not only causing diabetes, but also obesity, dental issues, and other health problems. These, in turn, can affect academic performance and overall well-being.

Data cited by the board shows that children aged 4-10 get about 13% of their daily calories from sugar, and those aged 11-18 get around 15%.

This is three times the suggested limit of 5%.

Following advice from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), CBSE has asked schools to display “sugar boards”.

These boards must contain key facts like the daily sugar limit, sugar levels in common food items such as junk food and soft drinks, and the health problems linked to excess sugar. Suggestions for healthier alternatives must also be shown.

Along with the boards, schools are also required to hold seminars and workshops to spread awareness among students. They must submit a short report with a few photographs on these efforts by July 15.

The directive is part of a wider push to make school campuses healthier and to encourage better food choices among children. CBSE officials said these steps are meant to support students' long-term physical and mental health.
