The State government on Monday sanctioned 1,099 posts to medical colleges. The present strength of doctors that includes Assistant Professors and Associate Professors, staff nurses, paramedical and ministerial staff in Government teaching hospitals are falling woefully short in meeting the ever-increasing workload, patient-inflow and seasonal ailments.

Out of the 1,099 posts that have been sanctioned, the authorities have sanctioned 115 posts of Associate Professors, 218 posts of Assistant Professors and close to 560 posts of staff nurses for teaching hospitals in the State.

Senior health officials here said that already teams of Medical Council of India (MCI) during their routine inspections in teaching hospitals had raised the issue of shortage of teaching staff, doctors and nurses and had advised

authorities here to adhere to minimum standard requirements.
In fact, close to 150 Post-Graduate seats in various State-run teaching hospitals were in line, due to shortage of teaching staff, nurses and health care workers.

The MCI was on the verge of de-recognising several PG seats due to shortage of teaching faculty in the medical colleges.Apart from teaching staff and nurses, the rest of the posts that were sanctioned consist entirely of support staff in the administration including record clerks, typists, social workers and technical assistants.

In some teaching hospitals, posts to fill child psychologists, dark room assistants, epidemiologists and a solitary post of Professor in Dental Surgery for Government Dental College in Nizamabad has been sanctioned.
