Hyderabad: TV actress S Naga Jhansi’s lover Surya Teja was arrested on Tuesday on the charge of abetting the former’s suicide.

Jhansi, 21, had committed suicide at her Yellareddyguda flat by hanging from a ceiling fan with a sari on February 5. As Jhansi did not leave any suicide note, police tried to check her two phones (iPhone & Samsung) to see if there was any evidence.

Cops could not open the iPhone, but they managed to check the contents of her Samsung phone. “On the day of suicide, Jhansi had called Surya and spoke to him. Surya spoke to her curtly complaining that she did not call him for two days and disconnected the call. Subsequently, he did not answer her phone calls as he was busy at workplace,” Panjagutta sub-inspector (SI) I Chandrasekhar said.

During questioning, Surya told cops that he knew Jhansi for over 10 months, but claimed that he did not cheat her by promising to marry her. “Surya said that Jhansi wanted to marry him and he also said that after the marriage of his sister he will talk to his family about the wedding. He, however, introduced Jhansi to his mother only as a friend and recently Surya’s mother told the TV actress that they were looking for

prospective brides for him. Jhansi was upset after that,” assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Panjagutta, Vijay Kumar said.

Jhansi’s mother Annapura alleged that Surya had taken Rs.10 lakh worth gold jewellery of her daughter. “Surya claimed the gold was mortgaged on the request of Jhansi’s family for purchase of land to build a house and Rs.2 lakh cash from the mortgage was given to Jhansi’s family. Surya claimed that he also arranged an additional Rs.3 lakh from a money lender,” the ACP said.

Jhansi’s family members also alleged that she gifted Rs.1.3 lakh-worth bike to Surya, but he told police that Jhansi gifted him a pre-owned bike worth Rs.50,000 on his birthday. Jhansi’s mother Annapura alleged that Surya forced her daughter to stop acting, while he told police that despite he asking her to not to work in TV serials, Jhansi continued to do so and she also went to Chennai without informing him.

Based on the statements of the victim’s family members and friends, police booked Surya under Sections 306 (abetment to commit suicide) and 417 (cheating) of the IPC. He was produced before court and sent in judicial remand.
