A Sudanese woman who attempted to smuggle gold bars into the country from Dubai was arrested by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on Saturday night.

The sleuths seized 1.799 kg of gold worth Rs 58.21 lakh from the woman passenger, a frequent flyer between Dubai and Hyderabad for the last three months. The AIU sleuths of Hyderabad Customs verified her profile and intercepted the passenger while she was exiting the airport through the green channel.

An AIU official said “The woman arrived on Saturday night by an Emirates flight (EK 524) from Dubai at about 9 pm. While she was exiting through the green channel, she was intercepted. During the checking of her hand baggage, the gold bars were found. They were wrapped in a layer of aluminum foil which was covered with black adhesive tape and concealed in three polythene covers.”

About 16 gold bars of 24 carat gold were seized. “The passenger was a frequent flyer between Dubai and Hyderabad. She has been placed under arrest and the gold bars have been seized. Further investigation is underway,” said the officials.
