Thieves targeted the home of a chartered accountant at Banjara Hills and fled with one and a half kg of gold and Rs 5 lakh in cash during the early hours of Thursday.
It’s believed the offenders — police suspect the work of a professional gang — gained access into the house through an unlocked kitchen door. The keys hanged to the cupboard were taken fr-om the kitchen and the criminals carried out the theft while occupants slept. In fact, the theft was discovered only in the morning. The estimated loss has been pegged at Rs 40 lakh.
The incident occurred at the home of one Shyam Sundar Sharma who runs an accountancy firm at Banjara Hills road number 1. The house is located within the Senor Valley gated

community.
“The homeowner, his wife and their child were sleeping inside when the theft occurred. But they did not wake up as the thieves were very quiet. The burglars opened the grill outside the kitchen and managed to open the door, which was not locked. They got inside the house and opened the cupboards and the safe - where they found the gold and cash,” said ACP of Banjara Hills, Uday Kumar Reddy.
Sharma later told police he had forgotten to lock the kitchen door. The family had returned from a wedding ceremony in Lucknow just two days ago and they had kept jewellery and cash in the cupboard, officials said.
Banjara Hills police have booked a case for theft and have started an investigation.
