Hyderabad: A 22-year-old man from Nizamabad district was arrested by the police for making objectionable comments on Facebook about the rape and murder of ‘Disha’.

Chavan Sriram (22), of Fakirabad village in Navipet mandal of Nizamabad district had uploaded photos of the victim and posted some objectionable comments. He used a profile ‘Stalin Sriram’ to upload the content.

“We have filed cases under the IT Act and IPC Act against the suspect. Strict action will be taken against those who have made similar posts,” Avinash Mohanty, Joint Commissioner, Detective Department, Hyderabad, said.

Based on a report, the Hyderabad Cyber crime Police registered a suo moto case on November 30 and tracked down Sriram to Nizamabad. He was arrested by and brought to the city. The case was registered under Section 67A of IT Act, 509 and 201 of Indian Penal Code.

Section 67A of Information Technology Act is invoked against any person who



publishes or transmits or causes to be published or transmitted in the electronic form any material which contains sexually explicit act or conduct. The offence entails an imprisonment of five years on first conviction with a fine which may extend to Rs.10 lakh. In second or subsequent events, the conviction is up to seven years imprisonment and fine of Rs.10 lakh.

Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of IPC attracts simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both. Section 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of IPC was invoked as the suspect deleted the posts from social media after public uproar. The offence attracts punishment up to three years imprisonment and a fine. Sriram was produced before the court and remanded. The police wrote to Facebook authorities and ensured the profile was immediately blocked.
