Hyderabad: Five members of a family were arrested by the Uppal police on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in a murder 10 days ago.

The arrested persons were V Mahesh (33), Naresh (36), Sudheer (28), V Vijaya (25) and Kethavath Ravi (35), all residents of Uppal and natives of Nagarkurnool district. According to the police, the five had beaten up the victim Balaraju (22) to death, accusing him of stealing a mobile phone belonging to Mahesh and later burnt his body near the Shilparamam at Uppal on June 20.

“Mahesh along with his friends including Balaraju consumed toddy at a compound and later started for their houses. On reaching his house, Mahesh found his mobile phone missing and called up Balaraju

who came to his house. He feigned ignorance on stealing the phone but reportedly admitted later to it,” said D Srinivas, incharge DCP, Malkajgiri.

Mahesh then called the others, who came there and thrashed Balaraju. He died on the spot, after which they took the body to an open place near Shilpararam at Uppal in an auto and burnt the body after dousing it with kerosene, the DCP said, adding that they then went into hiding in Ravi’s house.

The police found the charred body the next day and in the investigation that followed, identified him and caught Mahesh, who admitted to the murder. All the five persons were arrested and produced before court.
