16-year-old girl student dies by suicide in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: A 16-year-old Intermediate first-year student of Narayana Junior Residential College in Bachupally, within four days of enrolling in the college, died by suicide on the college premises on Tuesday morning.

The police said that the incident took place at 8.40 am, when the girl excused herself from the chemistry class citing stomach pain and proceeded to jump off the fifth floor of the building.

The girl’s hostel mates said that the 16-year-old came from a rural and agricultural family, and was unable to adjust to hostel life as she was repeatedly spotted crying for her mother. She had only joined the hostel on June 9, they said.

"We received a phone call from Narayana College management at 9.40 am stating that a recently joined hostel student died by suicide," N. Suman Kumar, Bachupally police inspector, said.

A hostel resident said: "We met the girl on June 9 afternoon on her first day and helped her shift her luggage, explained to her about the classes, timings and took her to her room. Since Day one, she was sad. During a lunch hour, she suddenly broke out with tears in her eyes and left the dining table."

Another classmate, who is also her cousin, said: "Initially, we assumed that it would her a couple of



days to adjust to hostel life, but she kept stating she was missing her mother and brother. We tried to pacify her but she was desperate to go home."

An uncle of the 16-year-old said that her father had got her admitted to the college by selling his land and was optimistic that she would adjust to her new life and have a bright future.

He said that her father worked as a labourer for eight years and works in Dubai on a labor visa. He will reach the country on Wednesday, the uncle said.

The uncle further said that the girl’s mother was in deep trauma and had not uttered a word since seeing her daughter’s body at the mortuary.

Bachapally police recorded the statements of the college management and the girl’s roommates, and registered a case of suspicious death.

The girl’s body was handed over to her family members after a post-mortem examination.

Following the incident, ABVP and Nava Telangana Vidyarthi Shakthi activists staged a dharna at Narayana College, demanding stern action against the college management. "The college management is responsible for her death," Nava Telangana Vidhyarthi Shakthi’s state president, E. Pavan Kumar, said.
