The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) sleuths of the Customs department arrested two smugglers at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on Thursday and seized 3kg gold worth Rs.1 crore. During baggage checking of passengers that arrived from Dubai in Emirates flight EK-526, the AIU sleuths noticed suspicious material in four checked in bags belonging to two male passengers.

Customs officials questioned the passengers about the suspicious material but they feigned ignorance. The AIU team then opened the four trolley bags and found three kg of gold concealed in the wheels

of the trolley and the lining of the trolley bag. “The ball bearings of the trolley wheel were made of gold and the metal rods in the lining of the trolley bags were also made of gold. The gold was coated with aluminium to avoid detection,” a customs official said.

The duo who are from Hyderabad have been arrested and booked under the Customs Act. They confessed that they brought gold from Dubai to hand over to their associates here. AIU team is verifying the clues to identify other gang members.
