Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman Sushil Chandra has said that over six crore income tax returns have been filed so far this year, which is 54 per cent more than the last year. 

He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the pavilion of the CBDT at the India International Trade Fair in New Delhi yesterday.  

Mr Chandra said, the number



of people voluntarily filing tax returns has gone up substantially and 6.85 crore income tax returns were filed last year. 

He said the number of direct taxpayers has increased to 6.85 crores in 2017-18 from 3.45 crore when the NDA government took office in May 2014. Mr Chandra said demonetization has helped increase the tax base of the country.
