Pune: Kia, the South Korean car giant’s new vehicle called Carens Clavis made a global debut in India on Thursday, opening bookings at midnight on May 9 for a token of Rs 25,000. The new car, whose price will be revealed later this month and sold alongside the standard Carens, gets multiple changes inside and out. The Carens Clavis, the MPV, which comes with premium features and three-row seat configuration, would be sold in global markets.

The new model targets both the MPV and SUV seven-seater segments in the domestic market, the company said, eying 20-25 per cent volume gain in the Carens portfolio this year with the new premium Clavis. Last year, Kia India sold about 60,000 units of Carens and a total of over 2 lakh units of Carens in just three years since its launch in the fiercely competitive Indian car market. The company is likely to cater to the fleet and budget buyers with Carens and the rest with the more

premium MPV Clavis.

Positioned as a three-row vehicle, the Carens Clavis is crafted for the present large, modern families, bridging the gap between MPVs and SUVs. "The unveiling of the Carens Clavis represents a key milestone in our journey, embodying our commitment to a progressive, premium, and purpose-led approach," Kia India MD and CEO Gwanggu Lee, said in a statement. “Innovation is the core of everything we do, driven by advanced technology and distinctive design,” he noted.

The new Carens Clavis will be powered by the familiar 1.5-litre Smartstream NA petrol, 1.5-litre T-GDi turbo-petrol, and the D1.5 diesel engine. There are multiple transmissions to choose from – six-speed manual, six-speed torque converter automatic, iMT, and seven-speed DCT gearboxes. Customers can choose from seven variants, namely HTE, HTE(O), HTK, HTK+, HTK+(O), HTX, and HTX+.
