California: In a major win for tech giant Google, a San Francisco Superior Court Judge Mary E. Wiss has rejected a class action claim against a gender discrimination lawsuit from former Google employees that accused the tech giant of paying male employees more than women. As per reports by SiliconBeat, three women filed a suit in September, alleging Google had a ‘sexist culture’ and systematically discriminated against women by segregating them into lower-paying jobs and career tracks, while men with equivalent qualifications leaped ahead.

The women who brought the case were Kelly Ellis, Holly Pease and Kelli Wisuri who worked at Google at its Mountain View headquarters. The three females have 30 days to file an amended appeal. Reports state that Wiss

gave the three women 30 days to file a new complaint “on behalf of only those women who faced pay discrimination.

The lawsuit that said, “Google pays women in California less than men who perform similar work and assigns female workers jobs that are less likely to lead to promotions.”  “While Google has been an industry-leading tech innovator, its treatment of female employees has not entered the 21st century,” Kelly Dermody, a lawyer for the women, had said in a statement. The San Francisco Superior Court Wiss said that the allegations were “insufficient to state class claims”. “The plaintiffs failed to demonstrate that they were underpaid for performing similar or better work than their male counterparts,” Wiss said.
