The industrial and workers' unions, on Friday, gave mixed reactions to the verdict on the labour unrest and mob violence at Maruti's Manesar unit on July 18, 2012 that left a senior executive dead and over 100 employees injured.
The Gurgaon district court on Friday convicted 31 workers and acquitted 117 others in connection with the case. A security cordon was thrown around the court complex to hold out trouble makers, if any, and ensure order in the wake of the judgment.
Kuldeep Janghu, general secretary, Maruti Udyog Kamgaar Union, said, "We have repeatedly said that any conviction in the case won't be justified.
However, we are yet to get a copy of the verdict and hence, would reserve our comments on it. We are likely to hold a workers' meeting and another with legal experts before we decide our next course of action."
However, industry bodies and locals welcomed the verdict but rued that it took the court more than four years to hand down the judgment.
"We want peace in the area and we will not allow such incidents to take place in future. We condemn what happened in 2012 and regret the loss of life. We wish the administration and industrialists work together to ensure peace," Om Prakash Yadav,

former sarpanch, Manesar, said.
Raj Singla, president, Chamber of Industries, Udyog Vihar, said, "It is a very sensitive matter, but we understand that the court must have taken all the evidence into account before deciding on the convictions and acquittals. We condemn the incident that created a chasm between workers and industrialists. A good working relationship is in the best interest of both. Workers and factory owners have to work for each other and with each other. We wish workers exercise restraint and not resort to such violence ever again."
"I believe innocent bystanders, who had nothing to do with the incident, were acquitted. We welcome the verdict. We are glad that the court convicted those who took law into their hands and resorted to such violence. Such incidents lead to strained ties between the workers and the management," Manmohan Gaind, vice-president, Manesar Industry Welfare Association, said.
The quantum of punishment will be announced on March 17. Of the 31 convicted, 13 workers were convicted of murder under sections 302 and 307 of the IPC and the another 18 of rioting and criminal conspiracy.
The counsel for the company demanded strong punishment for the those convicted.
