AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday said the Constitution doesn't permit reservations on economic grounds.

Reacting to reports that the Union Cabinet has approved 10 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions for the economically backward section in the general category, Owaisi said reservations are to correct historical injustice to Dalits.

"Reservations are meant to correct historical injustice to Dalits. For poverty alleviation, one may run various schemes but

reservations are meant for justice.

Constitution doesn't permit reservations on economic grounds," the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief tweeted.

According to sources, the reservation benefit is likely to be availed by those whose annual income is below Rs 8 lakh and have up to five acres of land.

Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution will have to be amended for implementation of the decision, the sources added.
