Prime Minister Narendra Modi is interacting with the beneficiaries of Deendayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana and Saubhagya Yojana through video conferencing. Mr Modi said he was  delighted to interact with people from villages across India which have already been electrified.

He said it has been 70 years since India attained Independence but 18,000 villages did not have electricity connections. He said this was quite unfortunate.

Mr Modi recalled he had announced from the ramparts of the Red Fort that every village in the country

will be electrified. He said the government walked the talk and went to every village. He said the government not only focused on electrification but also reformed the electricity distribution systems across the country.

The Prime Minister said, in 2005, the then Government had promised to electrify every village by 2009. He said the then President of the ruling party went a step ahead and said the government will bring electricity to every home. Needless to say, none of that had happened during their long tenure.
