The Congress party today asserted that the Election Commission (EC) must revert to paper ballot, like most major democracies, to ensure credibility to the election process.

In the political resolution of the party at the 84th Congress Open Plenary Session today, the Rahul Gandhi-led grand old party said that the that voting and counting process must remain transparent to retain people's faith in the integrity of the electoral system.

"There are apprehensions among the political parties and the people over the misuse of EVMs to manipulate the outcome contrary to the popular verdict," the resolution

said.

The resolution called BJP's move for simultaneous elections "misplaced".

"The BJP's move for simultaneous elections is misplaced. It is incompatible with the Constitution and also impractical," the Congress party's political resolution said.

The resolution added that simultaneous elections will have serious implications that must be enquired into and a national consensus built.

The Opposition in a united fashion has raised the issue of EVMs in the past too.

The matter had landed at the doorsteps of the EC. However, the top body has always maintained that EVMs cannot be manipulated.
