Telangana state government to form new governing bodies for UDAs soon

Hyderabad: To propel rapid urbanisation, State government has decided to constitute governing bodies for all proposed urban development authorities (UDAs).

In addition to the existing Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA), the government had recently created UDAs for Karimnagar, Khammam and Nizamabad.

Speaking during the Question Hour in the Legislative Council on Tuesday, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao said about 40 per cent of the State’s population was urban against national average of about 30 per cent.

“With the recent decision of Chief



Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to upgrade existing nagar panchayats to municipalities, our urban population will hit 45 per cent of our total population. Hence, we have proposed for establishing new UDAs to develop infrastructure for smooth transition and urbanisation,” he said.

The Minister said that UDAs will be strengthened by providing them funds through various sources including its own revenues besides funds from the Central and State governments. Telangana Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TUFIDC) also will provide funding for select projects, besides funds released by the Centre through devolution of funds and also funds under Smart City Mission.
