NIMS gets medical infra boost worth Rs 58 crore

Hyderabad: Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is set to add medical infrastructure worth Rs 58 crore over the next few months in a boost to patient services.

Apart from installing expensive medical equipment, NIMS will take its laboratory facilities to the next level when it inaugurates a centralised Common Advanced Laboratory (CAL) located on one single floor. This will provide all high-end diagnostic facilities.

For the first time in a State-run hospital, the management of NIMS is also set to operationalise a highly complex state-of-the-art pneumatic tube system, which will enable quick transport of patient samples and other small medical items from different departments to the centralised laboratory.

Mobile app

Health Minister Dr C Laxma Reddy on Monday launched NIMS HMIS (Hospital Management Information System) mobile application. Developed by C-DAC, the mobile application enables patients to download lab test reports on their mobiles. This cuts down the need for multiple visits.

The hospital also started gastro-intestinal and endo-bronchial ultrasound units at a cost of Rs 2.60 crore under a single roof. This is for the first time that the two medical departments — gastroenterology and



pulmonology — are collaborating to provide the services.

“For the past two and half years, we have been improving NIMS infrastructure and taking up innovative measures. But, the patient inflow is heavy and there is always a waiting list, we are trying to do our best,” Reddy said.

Authorities said two more hi-tech ultrasound machines at a cost of Rs 15 lakh are being procured. These will have the ability to scan and provide results within an hour, allowing the hospital to issue the test results to patients within a day.

NABL certification

NIMS is all set to become the first government hospital in Telangana to get the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). Authorities pointed out that the centralised advanced laboratory, managed by a third party, will meet world-class standards in laboratory technology. The diagnostic facility is all set to receive NABL certification.

The authorities will also apply for National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) and NABL certification. “Given the large number of development works that were taken up, we are sure of getting NABL and NABH certification in the near future,” Reddy said.
