Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao on Sunday flew down to the Nagarjuna Sagar project in a helicopter.

The Minister was accompanied by Power Minister G Jagadish Reddy and host of other elected representatives from the command area of the left canal (NSLC).The water was released to its left canal on Sunday, thus fulfilling the commitment given by the government to provide water for the Yasangi crop.

The water is being planned for the Yasangi in over 4 lakh acres in Zone 1

(Nalgonda and Suryapet districts and zone 2 (Khammam). Farmers opted for dry crops in the rain-fed pockets of the ayacut due to the lack of inflows which further resulted in lack of supplies to the Kharif crops in its ayacut.

The Irrigation Minister releasing the water said that 40 tmc of water would be given for an ayacut of four lakh acres adopting on and off supply pattern. He said that the water had to be utilised sensibly due to the less availability this year.
